Title: Wireless Computing, Human Computer Interaction and Future of Education

Abstract: Wireless computing is becoming an integral component of learning environments in higher education and at work places. There is a new trend setting up with the increasing number of “laptop universities” and distributed-learning communities creating new markets for content and expanded revenue opportunities for academic institutions. Online degree programs and distance learning with human computer Interaction (HCI) have gained a firm foothold in universities around the world. The technological change occurring in this time will revolutionize the college campuses from a one-dimensional (physical) concept to a multi-dimensional (physical and online) one. Along with the above, new technologies are also affecting other areas of campus administration. Social-networking tools facilitates the idea of connecting with alumni and support career service activities. E-marketing campaigns are transforming the conventional way of expanding the reach and success of recruiting and fundraising efforts, thereby proving to be cost effective solutions of direct-mail campaigns.
Research on how wireless computing affects learning experiences or learning environments is gaining momentum. This transformative influence of technology on learning, can be attributed to the advances in mobile and wireless computing, human computer interaction (HCI) and internet of things (IOT) impacts significantly the following: students learning, the content of courses, learning-related practices, classroom dynamics, and relationships among students and faculty. These technologies will bring about fundamental changes in the ways that the university creates and disseminates ideas, knowledge, understanding, and evaluation mechanisms. Many universities find themselves facing a new challenge: how not only to equip students with an adequate education in their field of study, but also to equip them with the skills and knowledge required to leverage technology effectively in the workplace. This presentation is aimed to highlight effect of wireless computing and IoT on the future of higher education.

Biography: Dr. Shubhalaxmi Kher is internationally recognized for her contributions to engineering education and research at various institutions in India and USA.  Dr. Kher has a BE (81), ME (89), and Ph. D(97), in Electronics Engineering from Devi Ahilya University, Indore, India. She has over 26 years of academic teaching and research experience in soft computing and applications, wireless sensor networks, and bioinformatics. Her diverse academic and research experience includes 4 years at SATI, Vidisha, India, over 14 years at SGS institute of technology and Science, Indore, India including 3 years as chair of Information Technology, about an year at Oakland University, MI, USA, over 4 years as Post Doctoral Researcher at Iowa State University and over 4 years as Assistant Professor at Arkansas State University, USA.  Her recent global academic experience includes summer academic and research positions at Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology, Gandhi Nagar, India; Krishna Institute of Engineering and Technology, Ghaziabad, India.

Dr. Kher is recognized for her accomplishments in many ways. She received award for her outstanding professional contributions in organizing ICAUTO '95 at SGS institute of Technology and Science, Indore. She is a Life Fellow- IETE India since 2000, Senior member- IEEE, USA since 2000 and member of WIE, Life Fellow-The Institute of Engineers, India (IE) since 2010, Life member of Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE) since 1987 and Chartered Engineer of the Institution of Engineers, India.  She is actively involved in IEEE activities for the last 20 years and founded and served as chair for IEEE MP Subsection in year 2002, as Treasurer of IEEE Central Iowa Section 2008.

Dr. Kher has to her credit 2 book chapters and over 60 research papers in International refereed conferences and journals. She has served as session chair at various International conferences like, ICAUTO 95 (India), SICE 98, 99, 2000 (Japan), IEEE-ACM 2003 (India), IPCCC’06 Phoenix, USA, ICETET 2008, 2009, Nagpur, (India), and NaBIC 2010, (Japan). She has presented her research work in prestigious International conferences. Her research interests are wireless sensor networks, fuzzy logic, granular computing, bioinformatics, distributed algorithms, data integration and analysis. She presented key note speeches at Nagpur for the ICETET 2008, and Shimla for the IEEE ISPCC 2012, international conferences. She has presented a variety of invited talks at international conferences.  She is a US expert at the IUCEE and conducted a one week faculty leadership institute at Jaypee University, in July 2012.

Dr. Kher serves various Technical Programs Committee for International conferences including IEEE SMC 2010 and 2011 and is a reviewer for many conferences and journals.
